We are often asked questions about jewellery during the course of our working day and we have found that some questions come up quite often. On this page we have answers to a few of the more common questions and welcome the opportunity to answer any jewellery questions that you may have.
I am planning to buy my girlfriend a diamond in the near future but I don’t know a lot about diamonds or how to buy them. People have told me about the four C’s. What are they?
A diamond’s quality and price are determined by a combination of four factors commonly referred to as the Four C’s. These Four C’s are carat weight, clarity, colour and cut. Below, is a brief explanation of each of the Four C’s. For more details on each of the characteristics and an in-depth guide to buying a diamond we recommend visiting the Gemological Institute of America website at http://www.gia.edu/ . You will find an excellent explanation that should provide answers to all of your questions.
Can you tell me the difference between platinum and white gold? Is one better than other?
Platinum and gold are two of the most commonly used precious metals. Most platinum jewellery sold today is an alloy made of 90–95 % platinum whereas most gold jewellery is either 10 karat (41 % gold), 14 karat (58.5 % gold) or 18 karat (75 % gold). Jewellery made from either platinum or white gold is subsequently plated with rhodium, an extremely rare white metal.
One is not necessarily better than the other. Platinum is a bit softer than gold so it is not always the best choice for every application. We would be happy to discuss your needs in person and show you the differences between the two metals when you visit our store.
I am afraid to lose my diamond stud earrings. Do you think that I should put on screw backs?
We find that the most secure back for an earring is a good quality friction back. Screw backs, although secure, have a tendency to wear out quickly and become less secure. Never mind the extra work involved in screwing them on and off.
Is it possible to size my diamond eternity ring?
Without seeing the actual ring it is very difficult to answer, but for the most part, if an ring has never been sized at all it can be made about one size bigger or smaller. If an eternity ring has been sized in the past it is possible that its size may no longer be in modifiable. We can provide a free estimate of the sizing if you stop by our store on Greene Avenue.
How often should I rhodium plate my white gold jewellery?
Depending on the item, you may need to re-plate your white gold jewellery annually. Items that receive a lot of wear such as rings or bracelets normally require more frequent re-plating than items like necklaces and earrings.
My gold necklace is too short. Can I make it longer?
Unfortunately, in most cases it is not possible to make a simple gold chain longer because the spot at which the chain is lengthened is usually obvious and unattractive. In some cases it is possible to add an extra loop and one or two inches of chain at the back without it becoming too noticeable.
I am planning on buying a new watch. Can you tell me the difference between a quartz and a mechanical watch?
This is a topic that comes up quite often when a customer is looking at new watches. A quartz watch is an electronic watch with a quartz resonator as its time base and is powered by a battery. A mechanical watch has as its main part an exclusively mechanical energy resonator and time display. Energy is added either by winding the crown or by including an oscillating weight which tightens the mainspring inside the watch.

What is a chronograph?
A chronograph is a time keeping instrument comprising a time counter allowing the measurement and display of intervals of time independently of keeping and displaying the time of day. A chronograph will normally have two or three small subsidiary dials on the main dial.
